Shortly after the release of foremost socialite and businessman, Obinna Iyiegbu, aka Obi Cubana from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja, a viral picture started making the rounds on several social media platforms with the claim that he took a group selfie with officials of the EFCC.
Obi Cubaba was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for alleged money laundering on Monday 1, November, 2021 and was released three days later. The EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed that Cubana had been released on administrative bail on Thursday, 4 October, 2021.
Are the people in the viral picture with Obi Cubana staff of the EFCC?
CheckNaija discovered that the picture was first shared by Cubana on 7 October 2021, on his Instagram page, after a book launch at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre in Abuja, a month before he was arrested by the EFCC.
According to a statement released by the spokesperson for the EFCC on Friday, 5, November, 2021, Wilson Uwujaren said “The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, wishes to disclaim a trending photograph in the social media purported to have been taken by socialite Obi Cubana in the premises of the Commission, crowded by people described as staff of the EFCC”. The EFCC reiterated that the said picture with the caption “EFCC Crew poses for quick photograph with billionaire socialite and businessman, Obi Cubana”, was not taken in EFCC facility and the people therein are unknown to the Commission.
